About Russel Albert Daniels
Russel Albert Daniels is a documentary photographer and multidisciplinary artist based in Salt Lake City whose work explores overlooked histories of the American West, centering Indigenous communities and contemporary experience. His ongoing project, La Cautiva: The Genízaro Pueblo of Abiquiú, was exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (2022–23) and the Eiteljorg Museum (2024). From 2024–26, the Tacoma Art Museum presents The Abiqueños and The Artist, developed with Daniels and curated by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s associate curator of Native American art, Patricia Marroquin Norby, pairing his photographs with Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings of the same landscape. His most recent solo exhibition, Wild Roses, was at Material Gallery.
Daniels’ work is held in collections including the Library of Congress, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Amon Carter Museum of Art, and Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, and ProPublica.
